“The aim of Launch48 is to bring together participants from different backgrounds and levels of experience in the web industry to think/plan/develop and launch one or multiple web apps in one weekend. That’s right, in 48 hours! It’s a frantic, energy fuelled, entrepreneurial event designed to engage all participants while offering the opportunity to learn and meet new people.”

After taking part in Launch48 as a member of EatinTheStreet, our product was featured on AllInLondon, where I was quoted. EatInTheStreet is a geolocated street food application which was conceived, designed, created and deployed in a 48 period. The project is currently being redesigned and prepared for a 2012 relaunch.

I also spoke to the UCL Enterprise Society in the aftermath of Launch48: see from 38 seconds onwards to hear about the experience:

“NACUE Attends UCL Enterprise Awards”

“NACUE Attends UCL Enterprise Awards”

On Tuesday 17th May, NACUE CEO Hushpreet Dhaliwal and Policy Director Matt Smith attended the 4th Annual UCL Awards for Enterprise. One of the glitziest university enterprise award shows we’ve known, the Black-tie event played out first in UCL’s very own Bloomsbury Theatre, followed by a reception in the imposing UCL Cloisters. With over 400 guests including UCL staff, students and many external partners present, it was encouraging to see the university celebrating the enterprising initiative of its staff and students together in a single ceremony.

Compered by the ever-jovial Tim Barnes – UCL Advances Director and NACUE Senior Advisor, the evening ceremony ran through a wide range of awards recognising the efforts and accomplishments of academics, students and business partners. Encouragingly, there were many NACUE Fellows and NVPC contestants being recognised.

Tipgain, led by former UCL Enterprise Society President Martin Poschenrieder won the London Entrepreneurs Challenge 2011; NVPC Semi-Finalists Brink and Frame Medical celebrated securing UCL Bright Ideas Awards, with the latter also celebrating an Innovation Central London Bursary Award. Finally, Circalit, one of NACUE’s seven NVPC Finalists celebrated securing a UCL Bright Ideas Award and an Innovatio Central Londonn Bursary Award.

We congratulate all award winners and UCL on an excellent evening of recognition and celebration.

Brink: Brink will provide a technology based solution that improves the tracking and analysis of people in specific areas through the use of a base station and a mix of radio frequency identification (RFID) and near-field communication (NFC) technologies. William Hines (BSc Computer Science, 1st year), Brink’s creator, wishes to create a mobile tracking device that can be used for humanitarian purposes, such as search and rescue during natural disasters and fires. Brink was awarded £10,000: an initial £5,000 to cover the legal costs for the patent application, and a further £5,000 upon successful submission of his patent application.
