Underage New York

I took in the crazy sights of New York for the second time at the age of 18.

Buoyed by our first paychecks and the opportunity to escape the UK, myself and 5 friends took in as much as the city could offer in 6 short days. At that age, the tourist sights accomodate the bulk of the sightseeing experience, but those rare occasions in Little Italy where we took illegal sips of red wine were novel to teenagers from the United Kingdom.

The true New York experience is in taking in a different part of the city each time you go there. In London, Paris, New York, Tokyo, and all of the world’s greatest cities, this process has been likened to taking part in a video game: you need to invest time and yourself into the place in order to uncover all that it has to offer, and New York has held true on this promise to me with every return visit.

Staying in Broad Channel, out in Jamaica Bay, we took in a totally different side of the city to the bubble that is Manhattan. Staying beyond those skinny 2 or so miles that make up the width of Manhattan is the way to experience the city, be it in Queens, Flushing Meadows, Long Island or Brooklyn.
